Types of Materials We Use

We've chosen the most beautiful, archival, eco-friendly papers and envelopes available, all sourced from local U.S. mills.

  • Wedding Invitations & Stationery: 21 pt caliper tree-free, 100% cotton letterpress paper made from recovered cotton linters, a textile industry waste by-product that requires minimal bleaching. The soft, bulky texture is designed especially for letterpress printing and also yields extraordinary print quality for digital printing.
  • Photo Cards: 15.9 pt caliper matte eggshell cardstock. Acid free, archival, certified by Smartwood for FSC standards and made using Green-E certified wind-generated electricity. The luxurious eggshell texture yields extraordinary print quality for photos.
  • All envelopes: 100% recycled paper

Our letterpress products are printed with soy-based inks and we use eco-friendly, water-based solvents in our printing process.

Our digitally printed products are printed on an HP Indigo press for the highest print quality with minimal waste.

Letterpress Print Process

The letterpress print process dates back to the 1400s with Johannes Gutenberg's invention of moveable type. Raised plates are pressed into paper, leaving a tactile impression. We use thick, cotton papers to maximize the effect. Each ink color is printed individually, resulting in restrained color palettes that give designs a simple elegance.

Hello!Lucky's letterpress shop, located on the ground floor of our San Francisco studio, is home to five vintage printing presses ranging from our original hand-cranked Vandercook Press to a flat bed cylinder press, all manufactured in Germany in the 1950s - 1970s.

We use soy-based inks, eco-friendly locally-sourced papers and water soluble solvents. In addition, our process results in minimal waste. Skilled artisans who have apprenticed with master printers print each of our letterpress cards and stationery.

Digital Print Process

The digital print process represents the latest in printing technology. Print-ready files are sent directly from a computer to a state-of-the-art, professional grade HP Indigo printing press. This method allows for cost-effective short print runs, fast turnaround times and minimal waste.

Hello!Lucky's digital printing is done by partners in the Bay Area and London (for European orders). We use the same high-quality, 100% cotton archival papers that we use in our letterpress printing, resulting in the finest quality with the ability to coordinate letterpress and digitally printed pieces (letterpress and digital versions of our standard ink colors closely match).
