Wedding Crafting Q & A: How to involve friends in DIY projects
How can I get my friends to help with my DIY projects?
Make it simple, fun, and low-stress. Organize a periodic crafting night (over take-out works well). Depending on the project, invite around 3-7 guests (any more than about 7 and you could run out of things for people to do). At your craft night:
- Divide the project into assembly-line style steps or stations, and assign friends to tasks according to their skill level. No one likes to feel like they're messing up your wedding, so if a friend simply isn't "crafty" or detail oriented, give him/her something that requires minimal skill, like stuffing envelopes.
- Be sure you have enough tools and supplies. This might mean having 3-4 pairs of scissors, a couple of cutting mats, etc. Make sure you have everything you need and something for everyone to do.
- Embrace the process, and don't be a perfectionist! The process of crafting and letting your friends be a part of creating your special day is wonderfully satisfying and just as important as the end product. Set aside a few perfect specimens for your photographer to shoot and for VIP guests, and let go of the rest!
If you play your cards right, your friends will happily sign up for more craft nights, and soon you'll have a bevy of wonderfully handmade details to add to your wedding and an irreplaceable experience you've shared with your friends. When your wedding day comes around, they'll all feel like they've played a very special part and that the day is as much theirs as it is yours-what a wonderful feeling!
